Urban Homesteading

Since we are still going to be living in town until the end of the summer, we decided last fall that we wanted to grow a garden. Last fall we turned all of the soil and added sheep manure to it to let it darken up over the winter. Who knew that the soil in Canmore is not actually soil, but rock!?!?
Once we had gotten all of the rocks out of our growing beds and created the raised beds, we were ready to plant! So far we have Lettuce, Radishes, Cabbage, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Rutabegas, Parsnips, Carrots, Beans and Peas! (I'm sure I have forgotten something) We also planted some pumpkins in the front yard to see if they would grow! Hopefully within a few weeks we will have a bunch of veggies growing! I would love to be able to go out in the yard and pick everything that we need for a delicious salad!

Work, work, work

Well my plan was to help out around the yard while we were here, but I came down with a nasty bug and ended up in bed for a few days. My husband and his dad have been hard at work without m,e clearing out all of the dead trees and bush and planting lots of seeds. They have put in a garden with potatoes and radishes etc, but have also planted brassica (a blend of different ground covers) that will help us to get the back field in shape and healthy.
We have finally gotten some sunshine today, so after a week of rain, it should be interesting to see how everything has begun to grow!

Rubber Boots

We are up in Spruce Grove for a week of work and relaxation! Sounds like an oxymoron, but really, I don't consider this work. Spending time with family and working around the yard is one of those things that just go hand in hand. Because it has been raining, I finally had a reason to buy my first pair of rubber boots! I've always wanted some, and finally will be able to put them to good use!
